New wine and craft beer shop opens in one of Devon’s quirky high streets

A new independent wine shop has opened on Totnes’ High Street.

Wine and Greene opened its doors to customers for the first time around three weeks ago in a move which saw owner Ben Greene’s online business find a permanent home in the town he lives in.

Whilst the online part of the small wine business continues, it now also boasts a shop full of 150 different varieties of wines as well as craft beers for people to get their hands on.

The range offers something a bit different to what you can find in supermarkets or in other wine merchants, with Ben having a particular love for Greek wines; he has family in the country and has been able to engage in an exciting wine offering emerging there.

Ben’s range is a carefully chosen eclectic mix of hard-to-find European classics, and undervalued wines from different regions.

The shop is also a specialist in the Mediterranean wines of Spain, Italy and Greece.

Ben, who started in the wine business in London before moving to Totnes said: “In London I was with a wine company for 10 years, we had a shop in Kensington and I ran the online business side of things.

“I moved with my family to South Devon – we have a three-year-old son – we knew it was a nice place to live as we have family and friends here.

“I had been selling wine online as my business for just over a year – we have a reputation for supplying a good range of Greek wines which we specialise in.

“We wanted to make it more of a local business so we were on the lookout suitable premises in Totnes and this place came up.

“We have expanded the range to include classic French regions – there’s more of a range of specialist wines than you get in an average supermarket.”

Ben’s wife Cat helps out with the business which is located in the town’s historic Narrows, and the reception so far has been great.

The 38-year-old is on hand to offer up any advice and expert knowledge on the wines and beers sold in the store.

Prices range from £10 upwards per bottle, and most days there’s a new wine to try in the shop.

“It’s been great so far, we’ve had lots of people coming in who are interested to take a look around,” Ben added.

“They [customers] seem quite positive, it’s something different and new.

“The range of craft beers have gone down really well so far, we have [beer] from the UK’s top craft breweries which we’ll rotate along with the wines.”

They also stock natural wines, organic wines and biodynamic wines.

In the New Year, Ben hopes to open the shop up for some tasting evening events.

You can find Wine and Greene at 91 High Street. Opening hours are between 10-6pm Tuesday to Saturday, and the shop is open as a one off on December 23rd so you can grab yourself some different and delicious wines for the festive period.
